1031 Exchange Guide
A 1031 exchange lets investors sell one property and roll the proceeds into another without paying taxes — powerful, but notoriously complicated. The rules governing a successful exchange can be dry and overwhelming, and investors new to the subject often disengage before they get their footing. The goal of this guide was to change that: make the information visual, logical, and approachable enough to actually get people through it.
As product owner of the Origin Exchange platform, I came to the project with a deep understanding of 1031 exchange mechanics, which I paired with conceptual thinking and a design background to build something genuinely comprehensive. The core of the guide is a decision tree that walks investors through each step — what decisions they'll face, what actions to take, and when and why — covering key considerations, milestones, deadlines, and common pitfalls along the way.
I led creative direction and contributed to layout, given the technical demands of the decision tree. I also used Simon, Origin's internal AI platform, to assist with copywriting — primarily for copy-fitting, making sure the language worked within the constraints of the visual format.
